With the Stones conquering the world yet again’ mid-stride- in a » World tour and now. The Beatles out with these unearthed nuggets, we seem to be time- warping in a seri- ous way. - And yet this set mostly lives up “to the expectations. Among the 56 tracks culled from BBC radio’: recordings ‘made ‘between 1962 and 1965 there are 30 ~ that just haven’ t been heard before — no big surprises, just confirma- lion of earnest homage paid to influential contemporaries. There's lot of Chuck Berry and some Carl Perkins. Buddy Holly, the Crickets,. Smokey Robinson, Coasters, The Teddy Bears, Elvis Presley, movie — starlet Ann Margaret, Ray Charles, Little Richard, Litthe Eva (she of the . Loco-motion hit). The tracks, taken as they are from shows like Top Gear, Pop Go The Beatles, Saturday Club and From Us To You, are of varied sonic quality. A few of the cuts sound hardly better: at all than the dubious Hamburg club recordings made just prior to the: BBC phase of the band’s career.
