JEYLORMOTIVE nday, July Ore. NQWS: + Nissan plants take annual awards NISSAN MOTOR Manufac- turing Corporation's Smyrna, Tennessee plants were recent- ly named North America’s most productive auto plants for both cars and trucks. The Harbour Report, issued annually by the automotive research firm Harbour and Associates Inc., placed Nissan at the top of both plant categories. The report is considered by many in the industry to be a benchmark because of its extensive survey of the entire industry. This year’s report found that in 1993 Nissan produced one truck for every 2.2 workers and one car for every 2.32 workers: the best results in the survey. This was the first year Nissan participated fully in the survey. tn the most productive car plant category. — Toyota's Georgetown plant was second: Ford’s Kansas City factory third: Ford's Atlanta plant was fourth : and the Detroit-based automiuker’s Chicago facility was fifth, Ford also picked up two top- Nive placings tn the most produc- tive truck plant category, with its Nortolk and Louisville plants tak- ing third and fourth spots, respec- tively. Both of Nissan's Smyrna plants use this system. “The real value in the manufac- turing process comes from our dedicated ernployees,” Benefield said of the management program. “They bring their ideas for improvements in the processes. methods and systems that we use.” Other factors listed in the Harbour Report for Nissan's first- place showings include well- trained employees. good product design and workplace engineering.
