Diabetes and How Old Is Rover?

Q: Do dogs and cats get diabetes?
Dr. G: Both dogs and cats can
become diabetics, In fact, Banting
and Best, the researchers who dis-
covered insulin, worked with dia-
betic dogs, not diabetic people.
Diabetes is diagnosed in pets by
finding high sugar levels in the
blood and urine. Diabetics urinate
a lot, have an insatiable thirst, and
a large appetite.

High blood sugar levels in animals
can be controlled, just as they are
in people, with regular injections of
insulin. This treatment is normally
required for life.

Q: Can you calculate a dog's age
in people years by multiplying its
years in age by seven?

Dr. J: Many people believe that
this equation gives an accurate
estimate of their dog's age in rela-
tion to their own. Unfortunately, it
is not quite that simple.

How

Dogs age faster than people -
adult incisor teeth come in at 16
weeks in puppies compared to 6
years in children. Humans reach
puberty as teenagers - most dogs
are sexually mature at under a
year of age.

We cannot create a simple table
comparing ages in dogs to ages in
people because dog breeds vary
markedly in their rate of aging. The
life spans of individual breeds must
be studied to estimate the aging
process.

Giant breeds have the shortest life
spans - Great Danes usually live
only 10 years. Toy breeds, on the
other hand, are expected to live
much longer— small terriers and
poodles have been known to reach
20! There will always be excep-
tions, but the general rule is that as
weight increases, longevity
decreases.
