HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS Cavaliers THE DAY was blistering hot and so was the Coll- ingwood Cavaliers track and field team. The small West Vancouver private school won its first North Shore high school track-and-field - team championship at the 33rd annual meet held at West Van- couver Secondary on Tuesday, May 18. The Cavaliers, coached by Jim Burnett, became the first to leap from sixth place in the standings one year to the top rung the next when they edged Sentinel Spartans by just 8.5 points (664.4 to 656) in the closest point spread since Handsworth beat out Hillside in 1982 by just 1.5 points. Not since Windsor’s win in 1973 has a school other than Sentinel (winner of the past seven meets), Handsworth or Hillside reached the top. Three. records were broken at . this year's 129-event meet. : Newcomer Shauna Bunbury, a “West Vancouver Grade 10 speedster who arrived from Williams Lake in January, wiped out the junior girls’ 100m record of 12.4 established by Jean Sparl- ing in 1971 (and tied by Brenda Robins in 1973) when she hit the tape in 12.38 seconds. Carson Graham’s Jerome Pathon extended the senior boys’ long jump mark by three cen- timetres to 6.99 metres, breaking Luke Meyer’s 1989 record-setting leap. Jody Weightman, of Hillside, added one centimetre to Tara . Kaehme’s juvenile girls’ trip!c “jump standard set in 1991. Weightman jumped 9.81 metres to set the record. Three qualifiers from each event will represent the North Shore- Howe Sound zone at the B.C. Championships on June 4 and 5 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby.
