West Vancouver District Coun- cil voted Monday night to forward Stallard’s memo to Vancouver Ald. Gordon Price, chairman of the Greater Vancouver Regional District Regional (GVRD) Bicycle Task Force. Stallard was responding to one of the goals that came out of the GVRD’s Creating Our Future report: to double the number of bicycle commuters by 1995 by promoting a regional cycling net- work in cooperation with the municipalities. Part of the goal would be to create a regional map of com- muter and recreational cycle routes, work with B.C. In the future, however, the municipality can look at making provisions for cyclists with the - possible development of another crossing of Burrard Inlet and the lower level road. “Allowing room for cycle paths should be a consideration in subsequent stages of development of the Park Royal site. However the provision of safe and separat- ed provision for bicycle com- muting seems to be 2 distant pro- spect,’ Stallard noted in his memo. Vancouver City has cooperated with the Canadian Pacific Railway by setting up a bicycle path within the right-of-way of an active rail line — something West Vancouver might look at in future, Other recreational opportunites for cycling could include local mountain trails. A major problem is that on most roads, cyclists are at risk from vehicles, while on recre- ational trails pedestrians are at potential risk from cyclists. ‘Separate systems are the theo- sick Join the fun March 17 at ‘The Cheese.’ IRISH FOOD & DRINK SPECIALS # Door Prizes after 69m we 12 imported beverages on tap.
