If you have suddenly found yourself having to care for an elderly or ill family member, you are among the growing number of family caregivers on the North Shere. Caregivers are faced with physi- cally and emotionally exhausting responsibilities that sometimes seem to require more than they can humanly give. Fortunately, support is available through the North Shore Caregivers Support Society (NSCSS). “Sometimes just knowing that others are going through the same experiences and feelings can help relieve some of the stress,’’ says Wendy Ross, who facilitates weekly support group sessions on the North Shore for caregivers. Friday, April 26, 1991 ~ North Shore News - 23 North Shore Caregivers Support Society is operating out of new facilities “There’s a lot of information sharing and camaraderie at these meetings,’’ adds Ross. NSCSS recently moved into new premises at Suite 8-103 West 3rd Street in North Vancouver where the weekly meetings can now be held on-site. “*Thanks to a $3,000 grant from the Senior Health Network, the new facility now also includes a resource library containing books and pamphlets that can provide everything from factual informa- tion on a variety of diseases to coping and personal development miaterial,’”? says Ross. ‘‘We even managed to acquire resource ma- terial from the USA, England and Australia. which has never been available here before.” The Narth Share Union Board of Health has also provided NSCSS with a grant to provide workshops for local caregivers. A series of workshops on topics ranging from Who Cares For The Caregiver to Living With Loss will be held from 7-9 p.m. every Thursday from May 9 to June 13. A complete list of topics and dates can be obtained from NSCSS. Ross will be attending a con- ference in Toronto on Caring In The Community next week. When she returns, she hopes to have new information to share that will benefit local caregivers. Ross will also be seeking active members to sit on the new board of directors for NSCSS as well as volunteers to help catalogue and maintain the resource tibrary.
