SCANDALS BAR & GRILL RES- TAURANT, 127 LONSDALE AVENUE, NORTH VANCOUVER, 988-2040 What the scandals were or are ! know not, perhaps they are con- Acciden tal Tourist needs The Accidental Tourist ** (Warner Brothers) Rated M (at the Vancouver Centre, Dunbar, Sta- tion Square 7, Guildford, Willowbrook 6) MACON LEARY (William Hurt) is aptly named. After the murder of his young son, he is leery of life. Macon takes careful, measured steps to avoid surprises, eyes unfocussed, expression bewildered. Even the travel books he writes for grey- suited businessmen recommend building a coceon of familiar sur- roundings — eating at American- style restaurants, taking a book to ward off the attention of strangers and trudging along the well-beaten tourist path. No surprises here. And it’s no surprise when his wife, Sarah (Kathleen Turner) asks for a divorce. Macon lifelessly agrees. Exit Kathleen Turner. Enter Geena Davis (Muriel). For Muriel, nothing exceeds like excess — hot-pink press-on fingernails, fake animal print clothing and an exotic variety of costume jewelry, all topped off TIM BELL film reviewer with a toothy grin. Owner of the Bow-Meow pet kernel, Muriel agrees to board Edward, Macon’s mutt. Using the dog as a lever, the splashy Muriel breaks through his defences. With her warmth, Macon slowly begins to heal. And the emphasis is on slowly. The pace of the movie is slow; everything is muted — colors, sounds, reactions. Even Macan’s offbeat siblings can’t bring this film to life. Oh, they try. They store food alphabetically, don’t answer the telephone when it rings (but discuss who the caller might be) and have severe directional pro- blems. But his two brothers and sister are just different shades of his character. This is a ho-hum adaption of Anne Tyler's novel, The Acciden- tal Tourist. You know, I've always liked her books; they make my family seem so normal. Hellbound: Hellraiser {1 ** (New World) Rated R (at the Granville, Fraser, Scott 72, Park & Tilford, Station Square and Clearbrook Cinemas) Ah, Pinhead Revisited. The story picks up a few hours later with Kirsty (Ashley Laurence) waking up in hospital! after her hellish ordeal with Uncle Frank and the demons that he angered. Her dead father pops up briefly from the underworld to plead for her help. Kirsty determines to release Dad with the help of a doctor and a mute ally, Tiffany (Imogen Boorman). Their way is impeded by her evil psychiatrist, Dr. Channard (Kenneth Cranham) Why Buy When You Can Reni? The restaurant has since chang- ed hands and menus, though from an initial perusal the new menu does not appear to be overly orig- inal: Chicken Fingers ($3.95); Potato Skins ($3.50); Scandalicous Gourmet Burger ($4.95); and Nina’s Spring Lamb Chops ($8.95). But originality is not always a harbinger of good food, so a complete review of Scandals new menu will appear in a future Table Hepping column. THE DUTCH PANNEKOEK HOUSE, 1633 CAPILANO ROAD, NORTH VANCOUVER, 985-0328. The original North Shore house o’ pannekoeks has been tem- porarily displaced to make way for an entirely new building. Pannekoek headquarters estimates it will be reopened in its new Pannekoek House in about shot of adrenalin - who has resurrected the nasty Julia (Clare Higgins) in a bloody ritual and opened the gates of hell once again. For fright fans, Hellbound offers a good score, decent acting and impressive, if graphic, effects. Others be warned: Clive Barker regularly attends autopsies and has a keen eye for detail.
