42 - Wednesday, June 17, 1987 - North Shore Mews Lifestyles [Adventures | planned for NV youth SUMMER WON’T be dull for those aged six to 15 years if the North Vancouver Recreation Cen- tre has its way. From a full-day summer playground and new Summer Discovery programs, to half-day programs — drama camp, art camp and sports camps — the Recreation Centre provides activi- ties for a wide variety of interests. The drama camp (returning for its second summer) and art camp are morning programs that include a noon-hour public swim. In the afternoon, sports camps, including golf, basketball, volleyball, soft- ball, football and track and condi- tioning are held. The 3:30 to 5 p-m. public swim is part of the sports camp package. “Besides the full-day playground programs, we've decided to offer a variety of pro- grams that introduce young people to specific skills,’ says recreation programmer Joyce Parkin Burk. “So if you’d like to learn more about drawing, painting and photography, then the art camp is for you. If you want to ham it up through skits, mime and theatre- sports, then the drama camp is your ticket. And if it’s sports, choose your week and improve your game.”’ Programs start Monday, June 29. Hail of Fishes has been rededicated as the Sandwell North Pacific Gallery, A complete redevelopment of the gallery is currently underway. It will present British Columbia’s most exciting marine animals in- representative habitats. New labels and graphics will include up-to- date research findings and field observations. A new salmon tank, large enough to exhibit trophy-sized ocean-going salmonids, will be the flagship display. The salmon story will than be picked up on the overhead figures and photographs, carrying the story into the aquarium’s display of freshwater rivers and lakes, just as ocean- going salmon eventually return to the freshwaters of their birth. The original B.C. Hall of Fishes was officially opened in 1967 as part of a major development pro- gram. The original collection of marine specimens from the B.C. Coast has now grown to approx- imately 4,000 specimens exhibited in 37 large tanks. For further information contact Ray Lord, 685-3364.
