El mailbox ><| Ea Hunter's wrong, metric’s better Dear Editor: How much longer do we have to read stories as the one by Bob Hunter on ‘Metric Nazism’? North Shore News, Jan. 4 1985, First of all } miss ° completely the point what metrification has to do with nazism. The conversion to the metric system was decided by the canadian. government to allow Canada: to compete with other. countries in the world markets. The change- over was very gradual and everybody interested to learn the system had every oppor- tunity to do it. On the contrary, the hun- dreds of thousands of im- migrants from countries with ‘the, metric. systemt. had to adapt overnight to the _English system and they did it -without problems despite the fact that many. of these pec- ‘ple had only grade school education. I am part of the growing and well covered chorus of people who use the metric system daily and I find it a lot simpler. It is strange that the vojces against the metric system come from people who have very little to do. with the system in their work. i have not yet met anybody who had a chance to work in both systems and did not recognize that the metric system is simpler and easier. to use. Bob Hunter still talks about a pro-metric minority. I'am convinced that country- wide the majority of Cana- dians has realized that the world with exception of the U.S. works in metric and we better learn to use the system if we want to stay competitive in world markeis. Fred Dvorak West Vancouver Parks news liked Dear Editor: Members ‘of , the Parks Department would like to thank you for your con- tinuous assistance of making activities news-worthy to the community. The old cliche, ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ cer- tainly counts for: the many fine photos you publish of your ‘‘Sunshine Girl’? and the stories do not reverberate Mr. Collins’ explicit cutting, we are nonetheless grateful for your involvement. An informed public is an appreciative public and to spread the ‘‘news’’ about our beautiful parks and their ac- tivities by your ‘staff is most appreciated by us.
