CS - Sunday, October 7, 1984 - North Shore News Eastern experts come to Cap CAPILANO College’s Inter- nauional Education Commit- tee 1s launching its yearly ac- tivities by inviting two foreign experts from the Pacific Rim to the campus. Dr. Jin Hui Ong from Singapore and Dr. Khongkhakul Vithavas from Thailand will speak on several issues in their coun- tnes, and on the relationship between their countnes and Canada, on Tuesday, Oc- tober 23 from 12:30-2:30 pm. Dr. Ong 1s the Head of the Department of Sociology at the National University of Singapore. He has served as consultant to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Minister of Defence and Minister of Health. In addition, he has acted as advisor to both ministnes of Labor and Education. Other activities have in- cluded membership on the Board of Trustees, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, and the International Ad- visory Board for the China to view FOR MANY years China has been shrouded in mystery and inaccessible to tourists, but recently it has opened its doors to the curious and the adventurous. His publica- tions are many and deal with topics of an international Nature within the social sciences field. Dr. Vithavas is Assistant Professor and Associate Dean for Student Affairs at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. A PhD graduate in Sociology, his area of specialization is ‘‘urbaniza- tion, social change and social disorganization.’’ Dr. Vithavas is also cur- rently vice-president of the Board of Directors of the Duang Prateep Foundation and a member of the Ex- ecutive Committee Coor- dination Group for Religion in Society. In the past he has held various university posi- tions (president, Faculty Senate) as well as positions with the Board of Directors, Church of Christ in Thailand, and with the Ministry of University Af- fairs for the Royal Thai Government. He has resear- ched at length topics dealing with the economics and social conditions of both ur- ban and rural Thailand. The talks by Drs. Ong and Vithavas will take place in Room H113 on the Lynn- mour campus. This college activity is aimed at helping make Capilano students and the community-at-large more aware of the cross-cultural issues that might affect trade, commerce and the general understanding bet- ween Canadians and citizens of the countries of the Pacific Rim—an area that is of growing importance to Canada. The visit of these foreign experts have been made possible through the cooperation of the local con- suls of both countries and a grant from the Federal Government of Canada, Canadian International Development Agency, and has been coordinated on a provincial level by the Pacific Rim Program at Vancouver Community College.
