GE federal election a Women ti NV candid INCUMBENT NORTH Vancouver- Burnaby MP Chuck Cook found himself a man under fire Wed- nesday as the North Shore Women’s Centre sponsored an_ali-can- didates meeting at Queen Mary Communi- ty School. By JOANNE MacDONALD Cook, criticized for not attending last week’s all- candidates forum on peace and disarmament, was repeatedly put on the defen- sive by questioners and can- didates alike. NDP candidate David Schreck took issue’ with Cook’s stand on transition houses, when the MP said Canada’s police forces have ‘‘done a pitiful job’’ enforc- ing restrzining orders on wife batterers. Cook said with a ‘‘change in the attitude of the police,’’ he would prefer to see that battered wives re- main in their homes with their children, with the men responsible for the beatings placed in jail. He said if the restraining orders did not work, then there would be a need for transition houses and other facilities. Pa Road ¥ (AO (0) irt rREK © nay ALE Schreck countered by say- ing Cook’s statement ‘‘shows a shallow misunder- standing of the problem of violence against women. The answer is not to have a cop at the door of every battered woman. Transition houses give women a chance to restore their self-confidence so they don’t always seek to return to the abuser and, in some cases, end up dying.”’ 18/76, Weest © rescore gra SALES 7 SERVIC t / ra PITAL 4 Hy fopode y ckle NEWS photo tan Smith INTERESTED MEMBER of the audience listens critically as North Van-Burnaby candidates spoke to voters Wednesday night.
