Al2- Wednesday, November 10, 1982 - North Shore News || election countdown EE Straight A's for W.Van police, firefighters TOP MARKS have been awarded to West Van- couver’s protective services by the municipality's chief magistrate. “My pride in Vancouver is typified by the fact that you can still walk the streets of West Van- couver with safety, night and day,” said Mayor Derrick ‘Humphreys last week. Humphreys, who is running for a third term as mayor in the November 20 elections, was commenting on a recent B.C. Police Commission report showing that the crime rate in West Van declined slightly last ~~ year, white “increasing” significantly in the two other North Shore municipalities. “Our police department,” he said, “is efficient, has high morale and is doing an excellent job. Compared to other municipalities, crime is being held in check. West “The advent of the police dog squad this year has resulted ina great deal of wonderful work, both in protection and finding lost people,” he added. The soft drug incident among young people has also materially decreased in the past three years, Humphreys noted. “Concern, study and hard work that started with the police board - with ex- celtent cooperation from the school board, the resultant Lifestyles Committee and parent groups -- produced an awareness of the prevalence of drugs at that time,” he “said. “The subsequent Drug—~generally-—- and Alcohol Report has been a most valuable tool in education and the diminishment of drug usage locally.” However, the mayor warned, the matter of = alcohol consumption by youth is still a tention of any parents whose families might be involved. Ball has lived District since 1949 and over the years has been involved in a wide range of com- - munity affairs. He was a charter member of the North Vancouver Lions Club; is a_ past president of the Norgate Community Association and a founder-director of the North Shore Winter Club, serving nine years on its board of directors. He and his wife Shirley ‘have four grown daughters, one son and six grand- children. He is president and managing director of his own company, Northern Credits Ltd., having been involved in the financial field for over 30 years. During his eight years as an alderman, Ball has served as a council representative on almost all community committées including: * The North Van Recreation Commission (six years, four as vice-chairman and one as chairman). * The Emergency Measures Organization (five years, three as chairman). ¢ The Lions Gate Hospital Board (five years). ¢ The North Van Chamber of Commerce, the North Shore Safety Council, the Union Board of Health and the Library Board. During the past three years he has served on the Water and Waste Committee of the Greater Vancouver Regional District and = is seriously concerned about the world-wide problem of disposal of all kinds of waste, be it residential, commercial or tndustrial.
