Prior to the Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic coming on stream in August 1976, the Vancouver Regional Branch, throughout its warrant area in the Lower Mainland, which includes North Vancouver and covers a population of more than 1,000,000 people, was destroying 80,000 surplus animals every year. In 1981, this colossal sacrifice of innocent lives had been reduced to 15,300, which included thase animals that were old, sick or injured. In March 1976, the policy of the Vancouver Regional Branch was that all animals, on adoption, would be neutered. The adoption fee would include all surgical procedures, plus a_ free examination with the local veterinarian, if required. The figures quoted in the letter by the Andrews family included four surgical procedures for the neutering of the mother and the three kittens. In past years, the influx of kittens by the end of April has been horrendous: however, in recent years, this has beea substantially decreased to the point that in 1982, the availability of kittens has been greatly reduced. To answer the question as to whether surplus cats or kittens go to ex- perimentation is facetious, because the Constitution and By-Laws of the Society strictly forbids the disposal of any animal, regardless of species, whether it ts dead or alive, to experimental Insult to all francophones Dear Editor: I would hke to challenge Peter Wards’ views in the Apnil 14 edition of Canadian Comment. He states-that this is the first time in Canadian history that the country has been ruled by a small group of French Canadians. Since fully a third of Canada's population is francophone, extrapolation would imply that about 35 years of Canadian politcal history has been dominated by French Canadians. Since this has not been the case, ant- francophone Canadians might consider themselves lucky. Furthermore, I fail to see how Pierre Trudeau's inopportune utterances or or coffee phone for. sunday brunch 2 FOR 1 SPECIAL! Other statements. in- Sinuating that anglophones and francophones’ vote Conservative and Liberal in entirety and respectively are absurd. A substantial proportion of anglophone Maritimers, Quebeckers and Ontario residents (who any politically aware person realizes elected our present government) voted Liberal in the last federal election. If Conservatives, as he states in ‘his article, really do believe that the French Canadian cabinet ministers are plotting to form a single party dictatorship, they are foolish. I do not believe for a thru April Pitch-in and Keep Canada Beautiful moment that responsible government leaders of any political persuasion think this way. Any that do should wake up. Mr. Ward's views nourish the unfortunate east-west division that exists in this country today. His com- ments are irresponsible and an insult to francophone Canadians in all parts of the country. John F. Unsworth Squamish facilities. The effect of the spay and neuter program in the District and City of North Vancouver can be further measured by the following: (a) that dead animals picked-up off the streets, or injured by vehicles, have been reduced by 80%. (b) that cruelty cases have been reduced by 48%. _ (c) that the ownership of a neutered animal does produce more responsible ownership. The statistics contained in the previous paragraph also apply to dogs. The staff clearly indicated to both Mr. and Mrs. An- drews that the fees required included the neutering of the animals. Possibly, the question that should be answered is: “Why were the animals in the shelter in the first place?” and also the concerns that the staff would not permit the kittens to be adopted without the mother.
