Dear Bob Hunter: A short while ago you wrote a column in which you chastised yourself for writing a dumb article condemning smokers. Well you, have done it again. Your “Lament - for July 1” qualifies as another dumb = article. Mostly I enjoy your “Strictly Personal’ but something else. Why knock this country? What is there to apologize for? This is a gfeat country. Not_ perfect, perhaps, but any country that can produce a Terry Fox and the people who responded to him can't be all bad. We have provided peace-keeping forces in a af that is number of trouble spots around the world. Given: help and support to people less fortunate than our- selves. Perhaps not as much. as we might have but we have no need to feel ashamed -of our con- tribution. During the 40s and 50s you grew up in the Old Canada you loved, men of the east coast went abou their ‘ business fishing and clubbing baby harp seals, without fear of being accused of brutal barbarism. While on the west coast we had a thriving whale industry. All of this went on before the flim-flam . artists | of | Greenpeace discovered that making us - feel guilty. about it was an excellent fund-raising ploy. We really don’t need to have’ our noses rubbed in it to know there is no nice way to kill anything. Unfortunately in this world all creatures great-and small prey on each other in a quest for survival. And all foul their own en- vironment. That is life and there is little we can do to change it. On the political scene, even then as. now, Oritario and Quebec, had the heaviest concentration of population and in'a democracy numbers Deserting babies is far worse Dear Editor: ‘In a recent edition of the North Shore News there was a story with the headline *Mother Theresa Hits Abortion.” We, the women of North America, are being asked to follow the example of the “purity and Faith” of the women of India, who, rather than have an abortion, will leave their newborn infants in the dustbins, in the hopes that someone will find and care for them. In a country with so much poverty, over-population and human despair I wonder just how many of these children will get rescued from the dustbins. I wonder also which is the worst form of murder, the abortion of a fetus or the slow starvation of a full-term newborn child? I do not have the right to say to other women whether abortion is right or wrong. abortion is a very emotional and personal thing: however, I do not un- derstand the reasoning against birth control. Natural birth control methods are very unreliable at the best of times. There must be some kind of a compromise and birth © control. seems the most ~ logical. ee We in North America are. - very lucky, we are not in the terrible sense of desperation that we feel we must desert - our newborns in the dust- _ bins. We are in a situation where we can, with the aid of birth control and birth =: control information, make each child a wanted one. We do have the right to choose without the right to “mur- der”. Perhaps it is time that we try to make that choice available to the women of the underdeveloped countries as well. Sue Cook North Vancouver LEAVING. A TRAIL?
