(Terry Peters photo) By CHRIS LLOYD Until last Friday, George Tyson had mever known the ex- perience of waking up. and feeling that he did not want to go to work at North Vancouver City Fire Department. But Friday saw ‘the beginning of a new trend in his life as he mulled over the idea of not having to get up quite so early if he felt like it once in a while. He was already becoming used to the idea that he might well get to enjoy not having to go to work as chief fire prevention officer in the hall where he had worked for 30 years. — a “I’ve enjoyed the job and now I’m going to enjoy my retirement,”. he says, ex- plaining his attitude towards leaving his job. The previous night he had said his goodbyes to the fire department and his City employers at a dinner held in his honor, handing over his job to Deputy Chief Larry Barker, the Vformer lieutenant, Tyson had worked with in recent years. He thought of how the job would change and expand under Barker's command, as -he reflected on the growth he'd seen since joining the department in 1950 the same day that two remaining staff, Chief Dick Hallaway and Captain Claude Dom- phousse, also started there. DEMANDING Over the years Tyson has seen the requirements and standards of the firemen’s work steadily imcrease as they have kept abreast with technology and the growth of North Van. “We never really received any training and knew anything in those days,” he recalls. “People here know more in a month on the job CONTINUED ON PAGE C2 Held Over!
