~ HAPPINESS 1S SCORING GOALS and Willie Iohnston is ‘one of the few Whitecaps with anything to celebrate about. The ficet and popular Scottish winger has two goals in two games. Here he fs congratulated by fellow Scot David Robb. Willie and his pals will be in action Saturday night against Seattle Sounders at Empire Stadium. Soun- ders have yet to lose while Caps are still searching for the elusive win column. (Kent Kaliberg photo) By ANDY FRASER Vancouver Whitecaps visitors on Saturday night could be the sleepers of the division if not the league. When ‘the old fox’ Alan Hinton took over the coaching duties at Seattle following his dismissal from Tulsa because of management disputes, and following Jim Gabriel's resignation from the Sounder coaching reins, few thought the former Whitecap winger wizard and assistant coach back in 1978 could put together a strong contender for at least a couple of seasons. While the season is still young, Sounders have won their first two games, against Detroit and California, and have yet to be scored on. Whitecaps, as all loyal fans are aware, have dropped their two openers. Dismissed as also-rans before the season began, the division rivals, who also picked up a new owner since last year, are causing a bit of surprise among the ‘experts.’ When Hinton moved up from Tulsa he brought along some of his players including Canadian goalie Jack Brand, who has picked up the two shut-outs, and Roger Davies, a smooth striker formerly from Derby County. Anchoring the Sounder back line which boasts Victoria's Ian Bridge, is Bruce Rioch, quite possibly one of the best signings in the league this. season, although no one seems fully aware that this former Captain of Scotland is even around-except Sounders, GOLF?
