There are several. walking” trails in the parks as well asa cycle path, camping and fishing. The picturesque village of its red covered bridge, 1836 flour mill; antique shops and good restaurants, is a popular destination for residents of the capital region. An old steam locomotive takes train loads of visitors from Ottawa to Wakefield, during the: summer, for an interesting 27 km (17 miles) ride along the Gatineau River. _ The Paugan Dam, at Low, and the underground river, at Kazabazua, attract many while the bustling town of Maniwaki is the starting ‘point for canoe and fishing expeditions. At Grand Remous, 167 km (103 miles) from Ottawa, the highway turns south _ toward the Laurentians and Montreal and north toward the 13,615 km? (5,257 sq.. mi.) La Verendrye Park, an anglers’ and campers’ paradise. ~ MONTEBELLO Ontario’s Highway 417 takes—motorists swiftly, by divided highway from Ot- tawa, all the way to Mon- treal but for vacationers, Quebec’s Highway 148 offers a. more leisurely and scenic the pleasant alternative, through ‘pic- turesque towns and villages along the Ottawa River. Montebello, 80 km (50 miles) from Hull and Mirabel’ International Airport are perhaps the most interesting stops. _ The Chateau Montebello, a 200-room CP Hotel, is a romantic log building with a gigantic stone fireplace. with six open faces. _. Highway 323, from Montebello, leads to Saint- Jovite and the Laurentians. Back on Highway 148 are towns and OLD WORLD CHARM abounds in many of the towns, citles and villages of Quebec.
