If you’ve been thinking of new skis this year but still haven't got around to buying them, now is an excellent — time to make up your mind. The end of season sales are turning up some fantastic buys, in some places as much as a 50% discount is offered! While we waited around at Whistler Mountain for a decision on the World Cup Race I took the opportunity to test a few of Jim Mc- Conkey’s demonstrator skis, and I-was amazed at their performance. If, like me _you’ve been cruising around on your favorite long skis for the past few years without paying much attention to the new shorties and midis, you are in for a few surprises. The short skis were originally designed to make ! turning easier, additionally the width of the ski was increased to give the same amount of base area on the snow as a ski 20 cm. longer. This type of ski is ideal for beginners and intermediates. The midi, or compact models were then brought out to answor the need for a ski that was long enough to allow high speeds and wide turns and yet short enough to go through the pumps and moguls. They come slightly , shorter and wider than the , regular cut ski, and provide the ideal answer for the recreational skier who can’t get out on the slopes every day, and isn’t quite as fit as they would like to be, but still wants a pretty high performance ski.
