MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR: SCHOOL NEWS Eric and the other winners walked along the intertidal zone of exposed rocky shores, looked at the communities of plants and animals living on the docks and pilings and did plankton tows to filter out the small plants and animals living in the water. In the laboratory, the group was able to examine many marine creatures under the microscopes and take a close look at how they feed, move and escape predators. The highlights of the weekend were a visit to a sea lion haul out, otter trawling to catch bottom fish and bottom dredging to examine subtidal sea life. In addition to the children’s Lynn Valley McDonalds calendar artwork, the calendar will feature information on marine organisms and notes on seasonal marine events, such as the grey whale migration and the herring spawn. The Marine Life Art Calendar 1989, A Seasonal Diary Mlustrated by British Columbia Artists, is available from the Bamfield Marine Station for $3 plus $1 postage and handling (Bamfield, B.C., VOR 1B0, 728-3301) or can be purchased at the Vancouver Public Aquarium gift store.
