Promises made must be kept. ~ promoted mental handicap myth Dear Editor: 7 Asa person who works with # mentally challendged adults living independently in the North Shore community, I feel the need to res- pond to your coverage of the un- fortunate event which occured last ‘month at Cedar Village. A middle-aged man living in the townhouse complex attacked his neighbor's child, The articleon the incident in- formed us that the man was men- tally challenged, The*article “also explains the | “anger: of: neighbors: ‘who ‘were not told of ‘the: man’s handicap. They feared * that others: vin’ 'the. com- munity may be living ‘in the same potentially dangerous situation without notification.” In this account, a dangerously incorrect connection was made between an individual’s mental capacity and their threat to the community. Carlson referred to de-institu- tionalization as a ‘‘new direction”’ in health care. It is not. Most large institutions closed their doers years ago. ; The result of this being that many individuals with mental handicaps have been living suc- cessfully in independent apart- ments for‘nearly.a decade. ‘Seeking Royal Marine Commandos _ Dear Editor: 2 ; . 1 have | already « called your offi ice to see if you. could help: “me. locate : any ex-British ser- _-icemen | "living on the North Shore, oy “| have been advised to write ~ outlining this to: you: hoping. you may be able to print my ° deter i in your Paper+ . The article of August 8th, if not refuted, will help to keep that myth alive. \ No. one has the right to ask if their neighbor has a mental hand- icap. It is none of their business. Whether or not. an individual has a history of violent and unusual ‘behavior is perhaps a more legitimate concern. The North Shore is a model community for services being of- fered to the mentally challenged. One reason for. this is the ongoing support.and under- standing of the community. Making generalizations based on the behavior of: one. individual, who by no means represents the ‘mentally .challenged community ,is more than unfair. It is prejudice. A.
