UNDERINSURED MOTORIST
Protection, known as “UMP," is
an extra layer of Autoplan in:
surance that has changed
significantly over the past two
years.

UMP protects those covered by
it in the event they are injured by
a motorist who doesn’t have
encugh Third Party Liability
coverage to fully pay for the inju-
“ry claim.

It is- particularly valuable for
British Columbians travelling in
the United States where the
third-party-coverage limits carried
by motorists can be very low.

However, it can be just as im-
portant here at home in the event

of an accident caused by an out- °

‘ of-province motorist or even
someone carrying only the basic,
mandaivory $200,000 in ICBC
coverage.

When it was first introduced as
an option in 1980, the limit of
-UMP’s coverage was the amount
of, third-party coverage on the
vehicle policy.

For example: a motorist from
Alberta with $100,000. in third-

party coverage and UMP, The
claim settles for $400,000. The
first $100,000 would be paid by
the Albertan’s insurance company
and the rest would come from
ICBC through the UMP coverage.

An important point to note is
that the original UMP coverage
was shared amongst all passengers
in a vehicle.

In January 1992, UMP became.
part of the basic Autoplan
coverage. As such, ICBC extended
this coveruge to everyone in B.C.

-with a valid driver’s licence, plus

anyone in their household.

Rather than being tied to the
third-party limit on a vehicle, to
be shared among all vehicle occu-
pants in the event of an accident,
the UMP coverage became a flat
$2 million per person.

This represented a substantial
increase in coverage and, in fact,
much more than is necessary for
most people.

As a result, ICBC has reduced
the UMP limit to $1 million for
all 1993 Autoplan policies.

However, if you feel that $2
million in coverage is more ap-
propriate for your needs, you can
purchase the extra proiection as
an option from your- Autoplan
broker. ,
