IF I were an employer (which © on the other hand God forbid), | would make sure I didn’t hire any of the ‘‘minorities.’’ Not even if they were whiz-kids. And that would have nothing to do with “racism.”’ It would be a practical decision, and the social engineers and human righters who have never had to meet a payroll could go to hell. Hiring minorities means trouble because they have to be treated as something special. Fire one, and he is likely to holler “‘discrimina- tion.”’ Fail to promote one, and the chances are that the same howl will be heard. There have been myriad “discrimination” cases in this country since our lickspittle politi- cians invited the world in without It seems he had had two periods of sick leave totalling seven months. His work had deteriorated, said the company, and he had become uninterested. The company also said that at the time of the lay-off, business wasn’t brisk. Nevertheless, it would con- sider re-hiring him if things im- proved. The “‘racial joke’’ issue also T hese 1984-style, Big Brother human rights councils are not courts. And then they set up tribunals to ensure the in- flux was treated ‘‘fairly.”’ But what is fair to one is often unfair to t’other, and that is the case in the Devron Hercules Manufactur- ing matter in North Vancouver. You may remember the headlines: ‘‘NV firm to pay $27,240 for discrimination.”’ “Racial insults, dismissal lead to award of $27,240.”’ The company is now asking for a judicial review of the case. But, things being what they are, I'm not betting it will get anywhere. The firm had been kind enough to employ Tony Baichu, a guy from Guyana who is an East In- dian. He was hired to clean the wasktrooms and run around help- ing the tradesmen. But he was laid off, and in went his complaint. Yes, he had been discriminated against. Thousands of Canadians are waiting for the gift of a life-saving transplant. The Kidney Foundation of Canada urges you to sign an organ donor card. came up (shades of Bill Vander Zalm!), Baichu having claimed he was the subject of ‘‘racial epithets’’ and other foul and in- tolerable things of that nature in the workplace. So the Human Rights Council found in his favor. According to council chairman Eric Powell, the company should have stopped the men in the workplace coining jokes at Baichu’s expense. Al Manser, the boss at Devron Hercules, tells me the racial joke matter did not arise until after the East Indian had been fired. How- ever that may be, how in the name of Allah can any management pre- vent jokes being made in a plant, especially in a welding plant, where Joe Lunchbucket’s outlook is of the popular variety and jokes are said to improve production? Perhaps the human rights coun- cil knows. If so, it didn't provide SCULPTURED NAILS So thin and natural looking EUROPEAN FACIAL 5 With deep pore face cleansing SUNTANNING 10 - % hour sessions the answer. But it did ‘‘note’’ that although Baichu had a welding ticket from the Pacific Vocational Institute, he had applied unsuc- cessfully in 1984 for a job at Devron Hercules. What that means I suppose, is that the company should have hired him in that capacity. Pretty soon, these councils will be telling employers who the foreman should be and what time people should report for work. You see where the idiotic human rights industry has landed us. Jokes are out and you fire minorities at your peril. Not only that, but judging from this case, if employers want to be safe they will have to set up spy networks to make sure that the lunchbuckets are acting like parsons. These 1984-style, Big Brother human rights councils are not courts. They are boards designed to help the ever-complaining minorities. Even if they were courts, there is no guarantee that justice would be done. For justice is a game of chance in which the dice may be loaded against you. The trouble lies with such coun- cils existing at all. They should be told to go away and do something useful, like working in a welding plant. Alas, they are the gift of politicians who are confused from snout to tail and wouldn't know common sense from a corkscrew. The human wrongs mess is closely related to the affirmative action mess in which employers can be told to hire minorities on pain of losing federal contracts. Never mind if the employer ends up with a bunch of duds. As Link Byfield, an Edmonton journalist (and employer) has pointed out, affirmative action is expropriation. An employers’ judgment is replac- ed by that of some social engineer.
