dubious, Kneen said, and
information about develop-
ments should use honest lan-
guage. In particular, Kneen
takes issue with the use of the
word “technology.”

“This isn’t technology,
you're talking about manipu-
lating lite,” he said.

“If you call it technology,
Wwe are manipulated to not ask
questions. Anyone that stands
in the way of technology is
seen aS) not~—s wanting
progress.”

An example of dubious
new food he gave was the
development of a bruise-free
apple by Agriculture Canada
in the Okanagan. If it doesn’t
bruise, he asked, how do we
know if it’s fresh, or six weeks
old?

Akey problem with genet-
‘ically modified foods, he con-
tends, is the assumption that
what is good in one context is
good for all. Nature is suc-
cessful because of diversity,
and monoculture can actually
pose a serious risk to future
food production.

“To say that you can take
an organism out of a context
and say it will behave exactly
the same in another context
— that’s nonsense,” he said.

Doug Gibson, a member
of the audience, said the thing
to do is make a fuss.

He and a group of other
concerned citizens went to a
supermarket recently and put
their own labels on the food:

“We've got to vote with
our pocketbook,” he said,
holding aloft a list of everyday
items containing GM ingredi-
ents. “We've got to get these
things off the shelves.”

Fast ferry engine examined

A preliminary examination of the
PacifiCat Explorer engine which blew
out last weck suggested a failure of
the crankshaft.

The German manufacturer of the fast ferry
engine, MTU, flew a technical expert out to
conduct the examination.

MTU has now asked BC Ferries that it be
allowed to fly the part back to Germany for
further testing. The company has said that if
final results confirm the problem is structural

repairs even though the warranty on the engine
recently expired.

The engine fizzled April 3 while the
Explerer was en route to Nanaime.

BC Ferries spokesman Deborah Dykes says
the vessel will continue to run on three
engines,

The Explorer has been in service since
November 1999: like the other two fast ferries,
it has been put up for sale.
