Beneficial Bugs Many gardeners

are looking to beneficial insets for
control of plant pests. Many flies,
dragonflies, true bugs and beetles are
beneficial, eating hundreds of pests
over the course of their lifetime. The
ladybird beetle, for example, may eat
over 2400 zphids during her life and
her larva (quick-moving, alligator-like
Creatures with orange and blue
coloration) are aggressive predators.
Auract the “good” bugs by planting a
wide range of nectar-rich flowers
such as dill, fennel, alyssum, daisies,
cosmos, yarrow, wild mustard,
spearmint, Queen Anne’s lace,
parsley, and sunflowers. Provide
“watering holes” for thirsty ladybugs
and wild w>=-s by placing a few flat
gravel-filled pans in exposed area of
the garden where rain or sprinkler
water will collect. Deter the “bad”

bugs by employing good gardening
strategies to create healthy plants and
to prevent the overwintering of pests.
These nethods include: pulling weeds
before they produce seed, mulching,
removing garden debris, planting
discase-resistant species, and
enriching the soil annually with
compost. Studies skew that beneficial
insects may keep pest populations
smali enough to eliminate the need
for chemical pesticides. If you are
considering using an inseciicide,
remember that the beneficial insects
are as susceptible to insecticides as
are ihe pest species, therefore, before
applying an insecticide, get assistance
in identifying the pest, make sure that
the insecticide and the time of
application is appropriate for the pest
and its life-cycle phase, and follow
label directions explicitly.
