fvolution of The Creators EVEN though they nicked the name from a Star Trek episode, The Creators are true originals. “ The dynamic duo of 4 —_ Andrew McCredie Crosstown Studios owner Al Rodger and musician-engincer Paul Cassano are taking music where few musicians have gone. Rodger describes their improvisational vocal style as “The Everly Brothers on acid”, and Cassano delights in having an audience heckle. Friends for the past six years, they wrote their first song together three years ago. Cassano was working at Rodger’s Lower Lonsdale recording studio and fate found the ove together in a room full of instruments. “We had a free day in the studio and we thought we'd just mess around and experiment with different sounds,” Rodger said of The Creators’ first steps. “We wrote our first seng together and it happened it * minutes.” Rodger added that the song, called the well and on The Crearors’ new CD, is the best thing they have ever dune. ‘The improvisational chemistry between the nwo gave both a fresh approach to music. Rodger, a 37-year- old Penticton native, came to Vancouver in che carly 1980s and has done it all when it comes to the lite of a working musician. The evolution of The Creators stalled after that brief recordiag spark a few years ago. Then last summer Rodger and Cassano decided to lay down some tracks and see how far they could take the concept. “We had no real direction other than we could experiment as much as we wanted to sonically which was pare of the program,” Rodger said of the duo’s vision, To be sure, The Creators’ celectic sounds require an adventurous, and open-minded, audience.
