I am also an avid skateboarder. I am writing to enlighten society’s point of view towards skateboarding and the need foz addi- tional skateboard parks in North Vancouver. While visiting my friend recently in Ladner, we went to the local skateboard park (which is probably the best in the Lower Mainland). It was packed and there were many profes- sional skaters showing off their skills. It is a great place to use up the energy that most teenagers possess, in a healthy and skill- building environment. T had to ask myself, “Why doesn’t North Vancouver have a permanent skateboard park?” There are two skateboard bowls in North Vancouver, one at William Griffin and another at Seylynn. In addition, the Lonsdale Recreation Centre has a rather small, tempo- ” rary indoor skateboard park in its curling arena during the summer. However, there is no permanent skateboard park for teenagers in North Vancouver. Why “ not? As I mentioned above, it is a healthy way “to burn off energy. Dear Editor: ABE La OTA TIONS te park needed West Vancouver District recently built a permanent skateboard park at Ambleside Park. .. hould now be North Vancouver’s turn to uuild a park for the focal young people. The park could be similar to the one in West Vancouver, with a street course versus a bowl. Street courses are much easier to learn on when compared with the bowls and not as many injuries take piace. A skate park has ramps and banks to launch off, compared to a bowl which you have to drop into (rol! down). Some citizens say that the construction of such a park would be too costly. However, con- sider ail the funds spent on repairing public property that has been vandalized. Now instead, direct those funds towards a skateboard park, to which teenagers could go instead of hanging out at the local corner store. A skateboard park would keep kids out of _ trouble and use all that extra energy. 0 Skateboarding is here to stay! Let's all sup- port the need for a local skateboard park so that young people will have a healthy atmosphere . for recreation and keep them off the street.
