The truth is, most homeowners become overzealous at the first sign of summer, They overwater, overfer- tilize and overcut. Follow these simple tips and you could wind up spending more time enjoying your lawn and less time tending to it through what remains of this summer season. O Why make more work for yourself? If you have a house and a lawn it's safe to say about one-quarter of all the garbage you place at the curb comes from your yard. Instead of bagging grass clip- pings, why not leave them on the lawn or add them to your compost bin? It’s a lot less work for you and it will provide plenty of nutri- ents for the grass left behind. ©} Give your rake a break Don’t bother vaking and bag- ging your grass clippings. Decomposing grass clippings pro- vide important nutrients and can make chemicals and pesticides a thing of the past. Try mowing late in the day so the clippings will settle overnight. Withia a few days they'll disap- pear entirely. O Short grass belougs on the golf course Let your grass grow longer than usual (at least six crn, or about 24 to three inches) to create a healthi- er root system. Mowing once every five or six days during the peak growing sea- son is sufficient. And when you cut, only take off the top third. Mow it tall and let it fall Ever find yourself going ‘round and ‘round in circles? Well, when it comes to mowing that's the way to go. Start mowing from the outside of your yard and work your way in. Take the grass catcher off and let the grass fall. Use the excess grass in the centre of the lawn for mulch or add it to yor. compost in. If you prefer, add a trap door to your mower to catch and cut your clippings into smaller, more easily spread picces. If your mower comes without a trap door, ask a lawn equipment dealer about installing one. if you are buying a new mower, consider getting a mulching mower. 0 More mowing tips Always use a sharp mower blade and mow when the grass is | Canac Kitchens of the North Shore Our New Showroom Is Under a Construction 6 \Come & See The Excitement!! Try col- lecting the clippings and spreading them on your weeded flowers or vegetables. Clippings make a natural mulch. They are also used to pre- vent moisture loss, add important nutrients to your lawn and provide natural weed control.
