The cost of an average tune-up can vary between $50 and $125 with the price increasing if prab- lems are detected. “There's a big range and ic ull depends on the model, make and how much of a tune-up it is.” “Whether it's a maintenance one or whether there's a problem” determines cost, he explained, While the newer cars on the road have become more sophisti- cated, so too have the mechanics who work on them, It is no longer commen for mechantes to perform a visual check along with manual adjust- ments. Most of today’s cars are equipped with engine computers that not only run the cngine, but also monitor troubie spots. During a tune-up a mechanic now hooks the car up to a mainte- nanee cumputer and waits for it to diagnose trouble spots that the car's cornputer has registered. “There's a computer systems check with most of the tune-ups,” said Brown. “It checks for trouble codes where if the system fails or if there’s a short or something and it doesn't get a signal it's supposed to get within a specified range, it will kick a number cede out.” All this sounds very sophisti- sated and the equipment neces- sary to diagnose various problems is usually out of reach of the ordi- nary home mechanic’s price range. However, most cars come equipped with a simple “check engine” or “service soon” light on their dash which indicates that the car's computer is picking up some malfunction with the sys- tem. Even though the technology of today’s cars has progressed past most motorists’ comprehension, a qualified mechanic with the prop- er equipment is sill able te per- fOr an avenipe tune-up ia ane to two hours, depending on the model en ee
