ONE PERSON’S convenience is another person’s nuisance — it all depends on the perspective. A recent example is all-night convenience stores, which have come under scrutiny since a vicious brawl two weeks ago in the parking lot of a North Vancouver Mac’s store. Two teenagers were hospitalized after they were attacked by a gang brandishing machetes and knives. As a result, a 350-signature petition was presented to North Vancouver District Council last Monday night on behalf of angry neighbors stating that ‘‘the store is attracting a criminal element.’’ The neighbors want the store to close at 11 p.m. even though its late-night hours are a means of competing against giant grocery stores that are open until midnight. But, assuming the store did close at 11 p.m., would it really stop teens from hanging out? Not likely. Teenagers are always going to congregate somewiiere, and if it’s not Mac’s, ils somewhere else. The real issue here is not 24-hour convenience stores but parental re- sponsibility. It’s 11 p.m. — do you knew where your children are? Do 24-hour convenience stores encourage teens to hang out? Nadia Nascimento North Vancouver I think any place that is local encourages teenagers to hang out. Everyone just assumes that because it’s open 24 hours that’s why people hang out there. Danielle McAllister North Vancouver I don’t think so because the employees are mean to people and they're not very friendly. Why would you want to hang around when you get verbally abused all the time? Bryan London North Vancouver Yes, especially 7-Eleven. I don’t hang out there, but I think it encourages people: because it’s an attraction. Like when the mall is open late, there are more teenagers there. Rajan Bahia North Vancouver Yes, because teenagers have nothing else to do. They hang out. there because it’s something to do. , Robb Gartry North Vancenver Yes, because. they have | nothing. to, do.
