stated, | and to the reader. kak Vancouver's first Fine Food with Wine Fair was well received, thanks to the efforts of the event organizer, West Van's Chris Col- etta of the B.C, Wine Institute. The one-day fair saw New York Times restaurant. critic Bryan Miller and Chicago Tribune food/wine columnist William Rice demonstrate how they do their reviews. New York’s Joshua Wesson, one of the world’s tap five som- meliers, and author of Red Wine with Fish: the New Art of Matching Food with Wine, hosted a “myth-bashing lunch” and wants you to know that “despite pretense to the contrary, there are no experts. ‘Mf anyone tries to humiliate you for your wine choice, he or she is a culinary charlatan.” So there. Wesson is also well known for his newsletters “The Wine & Food Companion’ and “The Companion Wine Review,” and you can catch him on his new PBS show called Three Men in a Kitchen. Don’t know about that title... West Van‘s Beach Side Cafe hosted a dinner for the trio, and West End restaurant Mescalero held’ a tuncheon (where $ discovered ‘that James Barber is still angry over being mis-identified in my column. He won't accept my apologies and now calls me “Airhead.” Yeah, well that’s Miss Airhead to you, Mr. Barber). Chatted with the dashing Bryan Miller (who eats out 400 times a year and remains as slim as a rail). None had been to Whistler be- fore and they were extremely im- pressed (they usually go to Col- orado — yawn). It’s tough having to dine with four charming bachelors — in this case, Wesson, Manhattan ortho- pedic surgeon Andrew Feldman, Honolulu neurologist Tom Drazin, and Rochester food broker Barry Klucker. Umberto'’s I] Caminetto delivered. The staff members were extraordinarily pleasant (although cur waitress, who happened to be the girlfriend of Canadian skier Brian Stemmle, made the huge error of clearing the table while one of us was still eating). Their music is a cross between Little Feat and the Grateful Dead, and their first CD, Sparks Off the Guard Rail, will be released within the next week or two. The Manhattanites left early — the party was too leud and crowded. Imagine New Yorkers finding a ski resort party too loud and crowded! Doesn’t matter I'm sure they'll tel all their friends what an awesome place this is — a great week for Vancouver-New York relations. th ok ook The Step Magazine party was no big whoop. the purpose was to celebrate a name change — to Vancouver Step — and a format change. I'm told that Step will no longer be an arts mag — it'll be a lifestyle mag going head-to-head with VanMag. The party was heavily hyped, with 1,000 guests expected, and getting in meant jumping through ridiculous hoops. Ballet: R.A.D.
