The week of recognition for smaller business happens annually to promote awareness of the significant contribution to Canada’s economy made by these businesspeople. In 1989, the latest year for which statistics are available, there were 932,000 businesses operating in Canada. Of these, 920,000 or 99% had fewer than 100 employees and 866,000 or 93% had fewer than 20 employees, ac- cording to a report from Industry Science and Technology Canada. Since 1979, it said, there has been a 49% increase in the number of businesses registered in Canada. Business development The Federal Business Develop- ment Bank (FBDB) offers a wide range of counselling, training and fianancial-aid services to small business, said Barry Goodwin, manager of training and counsel- ling For the North Shore branch. A combination of those services will be avaiiable to a small group of North Shore businesses through the North Shore Business Devel- opment Frogram.
