MAILBOX Thoughtful column was appreciated Dear Editor: Congratulatins to Peggy Trendell-Whittaker for an ex- cellent, thoughtful piece in her column on July 19. Her comments on our preference for money over lime aptly reflects North Ameri- can lifestyles. Someone once told me — over 30 ycars ago — that we may have time or money in our tives, but rarely both together. How true that has proved. } remember childhood days -- without a car or TV, a microwave or videos — with much pleasure, for we had time to enjoy our fam- lies, make friends, write letters, go on walks, and to learn much about nature’s cycles and seasons. Nowadays, we struggle to cope with full-time jobs, family and homes, social activities — and the temptations of TV, videos, theatre, sport, exercise, etc! — and end up simply too tired to en- joy anything. But, alas! Society still does not value the part-time worker — and Peggy Trendell-Whittaker is lucky that she can take this route. Many who give time to rearing a family, to volunteering, and to community-caring, invariably end up with poorer pensions and salaries and with little status in later years. As someone who fully supports a commitment to a ‘‘healthy human environment,” | believe we need to press for more equality and recognition for those who do choose time over the glitter of gold. So carry on the debate, Peggy — some awareness-raising is in order! Elisabeth Sestsraan North Vancouver NVD bureaucracy ‘stinks’ Dear Editor: For once, Noel Wright is right (Wednesday, August 28). The actions of North Vancouver District Mayor Murray Dykeman in not allowing Ald. Ernie Crist access to inforination of commit- tee findings ‘*stink.’’ It would be nice for petty bu- reaucrats to carry on in commit- tees doing exactly what pleases them “in camiera,’’ but keeping the aldermen in the dark (even the pain-in-the-butt Crist) erodes our basic democratic right to freedom of information. People like Ernie Crist keep us honest and hopefully free. Lorraine M.
