By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer WEST VANCOUVER _DISTRICT COUNCIL The 1,000 square-foot site for the project will be near the municipality’s waterfront on a recently cleared lot at 16th and Argyle Avenue. According to Arthur Mudry, who sits on the municipality’s Recycling Task Force, composting is the ‘‘next logical phase’’ after recycling and curbside pick-up, which is expected to be in effect later this year. Domestic household waste makes up approximately I0 per cent of a community’s general waste stream, while about 24 per cent is made up of green, organic plant waste and yard waste. “The establishment of a com- prehensive composting system could most effectively reduce the volume of waste stream, thereby reducing negative impacts upon land and air pollution,’’ Mudry told council. The demonstration project will be set up as an information and resource facility to encourage, educate and inform the general public as to the merits and joys of composting. Rather than a “dirt and ma- nure’’ operation, the proposed project will be designed in a trellis and arbor arrangement and laid out by a landscape architect to provide an added attribute to the nearby Lawson Park. “It should be worry-free, pest- fre and odorless,’’ said Mudry. The project is scheduled to run from July to October. It will be manned Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with volunteer citizen gardeners, assisted by a part-time paid coor- dinator. A basic criterion for the project will be to keep the site clean, at- tractive and accessible as an in- formation centre. The project’s compost will be supplied with regular organic ma- terials from the municipal parks © “Safety is no accident, : SO PLAYSAFE!” : e my e e an e e i . e e e e eo e Gt. e e e t -) e $ TheWarAmpsofCanada ings tor department, local grocers and local domestic gardeners, such as the West Vancouver Garden Club. Rod Day commended the Recycling Task Force for develop- ing the project, and Mudry com- plimented Mayor Don Lanskail on being one of the community's “‘pioneers”’ in recycling. ‘An exotic Safari into the . heart of fine East African indian Cuisine SAY THANK YOU to DAD! peertes=.
