VANCOUVER SHIPYARDS

Co. Lid. has been awarded

the contract to build the second of two 85-vehicle B.C.

Ferry Corp. vessels.

Last month the North Van-
couver shipyard, which is owned
by Seaspan International Ltd..
won the right to build the first of
the wo ferries for $17.6 million.

And while both vessels are iden-
tical, the contract tor the second
ferry is over 32 million moze than
the contract for the first ferrs.

“That's a wood question. | don't
know the answer to that,” said
Seaspan International Ltd.
spokesman Debbie Trinacty when
asked whys Vancouver Shipyards
made « higher bid for the second
ferry. “‘Apparently this is what

bid for the second ferry was

is put out.”

The second of the two 8S-vehicle
ferries was originally tendered with
the first vessel and at that lime
Vancouver Shipyards had submit-
ted bids of $17.6 million on each
of the two ferries.

Besides Vancouver Shipyards,
two other North Vancouver ship-
yards, Versatile Pacific and Allied
Shipbuilders, along with  Delfta-
based Vito Steel Boat and Barge
Lid., also bid on the two ferries.

Versatife’s $20,788,000 was the
second lowest bid, but the com-

pany was disqualified after failing
to pasta $2-million bond.

The terry corporation later call-
ed for new tenders on the second
ferry. but Versatile declined to
subniit a bid, while Allied and Vito
submiued bids of $20,481,}26 and
$22,700,000, respectively.

Trinacty said Vancouver Ship-
yards expected to employ about 50
people with the construction of the
first. ferry and expects to employ
an additional 50 people with the
work an the second ferry.

“That should keep them
employed until the end of $991,"

The tirst of the two ferries is ex-
pected to be delivered by July 1991
with the second vessel expected to
be completed in December 1991.

In awarding the contract.
Transportation Minister Rita
Johnston, the minister zeponsible
for the B.C. Ferry Corp., said the
Crown corporation had *‘made an
almost $40-million commitment to
our B.C. shipbuilding industry."

Present plans call for the second
8$-vehicle ferry to Operate on one
of the southern Gulf Esland routes.
