I was reading my newspaper when, a few stops later, I heard the woman next to me offer someone her seat. I looked up and saw that 4 she was speaking to an elderly woman. When the elderly woman refused the seat, the woman sitting next to me said, ‘‘Are you sure?’’ miss manners Juaith Martin and the elderly woman said, ““Yes.’”’ When it was time for me to get off the bus, i noticed, as I was about to stand up, that the elderly woman was standing in front of me now. Her handbag was hung on her wrist and with that hand, she was holding onto the pole. I was sitting right at the pole and she moved in such a way that her purse hit me in the face. I looked up and smiled, expec- ting that she would apologize, but instead of doing so, she remarked, “You're sitting in the wrong place — I shouldn't be standing up.’’ I sacred Beoraas fon NIT WELL DONE! Hanson ~~ When a kind rider offered me her seat, I said, ‘‘Thank you reptied, ‘I'm sorry, but I’m very pregnant and not feeling well at all.’’ Her reply io me was *‘That doesn’t matter.’” Miss Manners, I have been upset about this incident ever since. Why would she refuse a seat and then be angered that I was sitting while she was standing? GENTLE READER — This anecdote is so full of zany notions as to make one long for the simpler rule by which gentlemen were merely required to stand up without question for all ladies. The other lady had no business refusing such a courtesy if she did feel she was in need of the seat and was entitled to it on the basis of her age. To suggest that pregnancy does not count in the competition for a seat is wrong by both the traditional system and the newer one. But then, Miss Manners does not take her notions of etiquette — nor should you — from someone who believes herself justified, for whatever reason, in braining someone else with her purse. DEAR MISS MANNERS — Most sandwiches served by restau- rants are cut in half. The exception seems to be the sandwich that is served on a hamburger bun. Please Cap Theatre Presents: the bun in half. GENTLE READER — Much as Miss Manners would like to take sides in an issue that will probably take otherwise happily married people to the brink, she has to admit that neither of you is wrong. One may eat a hamburger, or any- thing else lurking in a hamburger roll, all the way through with both hands, but there is nothing wrong with cutting it in half.
