6 - Friday, February 17, 1989 - North Shore News INSIGHTS How Salvatore’s family cut the generation gap LIVING GREAT-GRANDPARENTS are on the increase, if not yet exactly abundant. But living GREAT-great- grandparents are definitely news — especially with all five generations in good shape. So meet 11-week-old Anthony Joseph Ellis, son of North Van native daughter Josie and her hus- band Darin, who were married here iast year but are living at the moment in Honolulu. Anthony’s great-great-grandpa, healthy 88-year-old Salvatore Ser- vidio, still lives in Italy. So does great-grandma Maria Piazza, whose eldest daughter, Assunta Di Nicolo (Anthony’s gran), was born in Italy but has been a North Van resident since 1966. And HER daughter — if you're still with us — is, of course, baby Anthony’s ma.a Josie. Five generations within only 88 years reduces the generation gap dramatically and, from the dates Assunta sent me, the Italian recipe appears to be simple: marry young FIFTH-GENERATION ANTHONY, now 11 weeks old, with mom Josie Eilts. (Salvatore was 18, Assunta herself 20) and get down without delay to creating new family ties! YET ANOTHER LINK with living North Shore history was severed by the death, Feb. 10, at age 87 of Roy Barry, believed the last surviv- ing captain of the West Van Fer- cies in their glory days up to 1938. Born into a seafaring family, he went to sea in his teens, working up and down the B.C. coast before joining the West Van ‘‘navy,’’ and at 23 he was reportedly the youngest B.C. mariner ever to get his captain’s papers. By the Second World War — during which he served in the marine department of the air force — he'd given up the "Photo submitted for safet} OLICITOR Genera) Angus Ree is on the right track with the government’s newly-announced crackdown on abysms! B.C. driving habits, but he does not go far enough. According to Monday’s announcement, the gov- sea for a music career, but was lured back after the war with Gulf Lines Shipping and Blackball Fer- ries (later B.C. Ferries). His love of music carried on into retirement when he became a member of West Van Seniors’ ‘Singing Ukeleles."* And meanwhile the family tradi- tion has been upheld by sons Roy and Allan who’ve both followed dad in maritime careers. tee WHAT'S A *‘PRODUCER’’? Depends on wacether you're talking about TV or movies. In TV the producer does the whole hands-on job, from writing the script to directing the cameras and editing the tape. In film-making the pro- ducer is the organizer who puts up the dough, keeps the books and hires the director — who does al] the other work, and in TV-land, would be called the producer. So just to set the record straight, that Coho Festival Society vidco Urban Salmon was *‘produced"' hearty. GREAT-GREAT-GRANDPA Salvatore Servidio, still hale and LoS eSS a (movie-lingo) on behalf of the Society by North Van’s Mike Nicell. His ‘‘director’? was North Van’s Cathy Parke (print the name big on the credit titles) — who worked out the budget, developed the format, wrote the script, hired the crew, directed and edited the finished product. And Shaw Cable provided the facilities. Between them all, they created one mighty fine decumentary, which has already won the B.C.-Yukon cable documentary contest and is now competing for a national prize. nen DID-YOU-KNOW-DEPT. — with an interesting tidbit from Tues- day’s well-attended !aunch of North Shore Tourism ’89. One of the North Shore’s biggest tourist attractions, the Capilano Suspen- eramest will pump more money into B.C.’s CounterAttack program, increase from six months to one yeer driving suspensions fer such serious offences as impaired driving, and require repeat violators to undergo education and treatment programs. Commercial vehicle testing wili also be expanded and 2 periodic roadside inspection program of private vehicles that do not appear to be roadworthy will be instituted. In addition, Ree wili appoint a traffic safety direc- torate to coordinate traffic safety issues. The overall program is aimed at reducing B.C.’s roadway carnage, which now costs taxpayers over $1 billion annually and, on average, results in one death every 14 hours and an injury every 12 minutes. The figures are shocking; the soiutions should be just as shocking. For example, drivers with repeat impaired convic- tions should have their licences lifted for life; man- Gatory testing of ali vehicles should be reinstituted; and the minimum drivers’ age should be raised from 16 to 18. But the ultimate success of any government program resides with the public, which must collectively learn to drive responsibly and absorb the simple reality that a driver’s licence is an earned privilege, not 2 guaranteed right.
