The federal gov- past four years to address our own ernment study ranked Port Mellon serious problem. Department of Fisheries, shellfish tested near Canfor’s Port Mellon pulp mill and Western Forest Pro- ducts’ pulp mill at Woodfibre ex- ceeded the acceptable level of the most deadly carcinogen known to man (a dioxin known as 2378 JCDD) by 3,300 per cent and 1,600 per cent respectively. The acceptable level set by Fed- eral Health and Welfare is only 20 parts per trillion, and yet Port Mellon .registered 662 parts per trillion, and Woodfibre 356 parts per trillion in the digestive tracts of crabs. Environmental Protection _ Agency in the U.S. states: ‘‘There is no safe level for this deadly dioxin and specimens exposed to nearly unimaginable doses as low as one trillionth of their body weight have contracted cancer and produced birth defects.’” Howe Sound is full of recre- ational fishermen and also has over 60 commercial crab, prawn, and shrimp fishermen supplying our tables. Since these tests, six months hzve passed. Why have no warnings been posted? (The Gov- ernment Biological Station in Nanaimo has stated that as far as they know, shellfish migrate throughout Howe Sound.) as number one and Woodfibre as Terry Jacks number three in all of Canada for West Vancouver dioxin and furan levels in tested specimens. Horrifying results are being produced by these insidious toxins and unless we act im- mediately our children will pay dearly for what these delinquent pulp mills are doing to us. Our air and water can only take ‘so much pressure from these non- biodegradable poisons, and we are fast approaching the saturation point. And Mary, even though all of ‘this’? invades and affects your riding, you had the gall, at an all- candidates meeting, to smile and say that one of these mills was just outside your constituency border line. These two pulp mills are only 10 miles apart and neither one has ever passed the federal gov- ernment’s toxic effluent tests. Why forced our federal environmental laws on these intolerable polluters? Mary Collins, your so-called “strong record in environmental protection’? as quoted from your brochure Caring For B.C.’s En- vironment, obviously doesn’t app- "FOR NV DISTRICT ALDERMAN RES i E | RE-ELECT hasn’t your government invoked E the Federal Fisheries Act on them? 4 | x! i Why has your government not en- & GADSBY, Joan Economist & q Marketing Analyst RE-ELECT ROD DAY _ ees aN ve FOR ALDERMAN WEST VANCOUVER Honesty, integrity, Experience Howe Sound is the heart of your WORKING FOR NORTH VANCOUVER Why should you vote PC. on Monday? i.
