22 - Sunday, December 13, 1987 - North Shore News Local plastie duck race to raise Rotary funds THE WATERS of North Van- couver’s Capilano River could be filled with as many as 25,000 yellow ducks in an unusual Rotary Club fundraising event next year. Plastic ducks — sponsored for $5 each — will be released Feb. 14, 1988, from the Fullerton Avenue bridge and fight their way to tidal water and t’> finish line, winning sponsors one of the prizes from a new car to dinner for two. “It’s just going to be a riot,” explained North Vancouver Rotary Club member Andy Turner, one of the event organizers. **! bet we'll have 10,000 to 15,000 people along the river (watching), but we don’t know how big it’ll be.”’ Originating in Alberta, the race is a first for British Columbia, and the Rotary Club is expecting to faise about $60,000 from the 25,000-duck race. In test runs recently, the ducks took as little as 11 minutes and as much as 30 misutes to cover the two-kilometre course from the bridge to tide water. For organizers, the biggest challenge is going to be recapturing the little devils, which are inclined to get caught in rocks and other obstacles. “Can you imagine the logistics of catching 25,000 ducks before they hit English Bay?’? Turner asked. ‘‘We’re going to be using an oi! boom.” Entries are now being accepted for The- Great Capilano River Duck Race, and sponsors should get entries in soon as there are only 25,000 ducks available.
