4 - Sunday, October 19, 1986 - North Shore News Bob Hunter @ strictly personal ® 1 THE PERSONALITY of a leader IS one of the fun- damental issues in any election, perhaps especially this one, where we have such a dramatic choice — between a brash millionaire and a humble teacher. It very much matters whether the leader is a guy who can cut deals on the run, whether he is a gambler, a go-getter, an oppor- tunist, somebody with the in- stincts of an executive and the toughness of a door-to-door salesman. It is equally important to know if the other guy is sincere, thoughtful, sensitive, hip to ecology, tolerant, good-humored, kind to animals. The problem in part is the job description of a premier, {t is rather complex and not very well spelled out for the age we live in. On the one hand, it calls for a high-energy type, somebody with a real Jimmy Pattison urge, almost a hunger, to shamelessly market the product, which is British Columbia, to get all the bottom lines right, to fight for turf. A true chief executive, don’t forget, is neither a lady nor a } gentleman, but a boss who will kill you with his bare hands if you threaten his hard-earned empire. , Leadership is a tough, dirty A business. If I was an unemployed youth or woman, I assume | would vote for Bob Skelly. If I was on welfare, | would vote for Skelly. i If I was a teacher, well, I guess! If I was gay or Indian or a f unionist or a student, Skelly again. Environment? Maybe I've grown cynical, but [ don’t see LIONS GATE how the NDP, indebted as they are to labor, can really favor trees that much over logging in the crunch. With Jack Munro on their side, how could it be other- wise? Reforestation is a beautiful concept, but it scems to me everybody is promising that. There is talk of decentralization on all sides, too. And_ that’s good. Nobody is touting megaprojects and everybody genuflects toward the deficit, which they all say they know thou shalt not increase. All right! Anti-nukes? I don’t think we're really in the game. Besides, in Saskatchewan, it was the NDP who kept the uranium flowing, remember. As a British Columbian cager to see a just settlement with native people, J] disagree utterly with the Socred tactic of refusing to negotiate land claims. I think it’s a shabby, irresponsible ploy. All I can do is hope that a hands-on character like Vander Zalm, willing to listen and learn, might actually be able to move to a new postion on the land claims question. That's probably just wishing on a star, | admit. Skelly has to get full points for standing up for the Indians, almost as many points as he loses for vowing to let picket lines go up around classrooms. The partics overlap on policies here and there, of course, although, as a general trend, everyone is promising to be nice Bridge tenders called TENDERS have been called for a contract to make modifications to the suspended. spans on the Lions Gate Bridge. Closing date for tenders is Oct. 21. Work will include — structural modifications to the three existing maintenance travellers on the bridge. The existing drive svstems on the travellers will be replaced by new diesel-hydraulic or diesel-electric drive systems and the traveller runway beams on both sides of the bridge will also be replaced. There may be some single-lane closures on the bridge between “midnight and 6 a.m. Monday to Fridays, while work is going on. Completion date is set for April 30, 1987. 650 Westview Shopping Centre 2 : PI othe raat st Time Home Buyers Seminar’ mm We know how confusing and complicated buying your first home can be. Out of 36 promises by Vasider Zalm, I find I can relate to 22 of them. Ten of them puzzle me. And there are three that | think stink, Out of 31 pledges by Skelly— these are just the one's I’ve been able to keep track of, you understand — | agree with 18 of § them. Seven of them irritate me all to hell. And six of them leave | me scratching my head. So much for the menu. To help me through the mental and emo- tional turbulence of making up an instinctively undecided mind, I try to imagine the next premier as the captaia of a ship. Serious- ly. My own gut feeling is that with Bob Skelly as premier, B.C. would kind of hang out in the lee of the mountains, hatches closed, while deckhands distribute band-aids and gruel, waiting out the storm. Under Vander Zalm, we would go pounding out into the waves, and frankly, I'm a bit chicken- hearted about skippers until I get to know one. Do you blame me? Aren't you? Cap’n Bill has only been puddling around in the har- bor so far, tooting a lot of horns, As a matter of fact he has side- swiped a few docks already. Skelly? I dunno. Maybe I'll catch the next boat. I vacillate between wanting to go for a ride, full sail ahead, or wanting to stop to pick up the survivors. Could we try a coali- tion government? It seems to have worked for the Israelis. Happy voting trails to you, too! peep C cov CORRECTION NOTICE The 1st Time Home Buyers Seminar as advertised in Friday's Homes Section will be held one time only at the: North Shore Winter Club 1325 East Keith Rd.
