What to do with drunken sailors?

A WEDNESDAY evening
incident off the coast of
West Vancouver has taken
Counterattack concerns to
the sea.

Police and marine rescue
units found themselves deal-
ing with an impaired sailor
who — despite being what
one of those on the scene
described as ‘‘falling over

drunk'' — insisted on taking
his beat out onto the rough
waters of Howe Sound.

Police were called in at
about 4:40 p.m. Wednesday
by a gas float attendant at
Fisherman's Cove who was
concerned for the mun's
safety.

According to the atten-
dant the boat owner was
determined to set out into

the two-foot chop. The boat
wound up off the Whytecliff
Park area, ‘‘putting around
in circles’’ with the sails
half-raised.

Police attended and with
the aid of rescue units
escorted the boat and its in-
ebriated operator back to
Fisherman's Cove.

The ‘‘rescue’’ was affected
just before darkness fell and

before a serious situation
could develop.

Under the Criminal Code,
those found operating motor
vessels while under the in-
fluence of alzohol are liable
for fines of up to $500 and
could face six months in jail.
The courts also have the
right to suspend the individ-
ual’s right to operate a boat
on conviction.
