A7 - Weduesday, December 5, Hi mailbox | ><| Dear Editor The apphecation by B.C Telephone for a 15 per cent increase sparks me to write to the ciurzens in your communi- ty, and urge concerned in- dividuals to intervene in the upeoming CRIC trate hearings. . It is Our view that in every community in British Colum- bia where B.C. Tel ts busy trying to reduce local service Operations, close offices, and introduce technology which aims to decrmate = local employment, communities have a mght to demand a reducuion in their rates, as well as vigorously oppose a dramatic 15 per cent rate increase Throughout British Col- umbia, B.C. Telephone 1s engaged in a massive reorganization and technological change plan. The main aim 1s to centralize operations in a few imajor centres, for only one reason: to reduce local service, and local employment, and in- crease overall Company revenues. None of this is necessary The technology which is now being introduced by the telephone company in fact permits the company to transmit all possible com. municattons without having 10 move Offices, services or people. But still the company wants to centralize. The only reason: to cut ties with local economies. This is all part of the move to ‘‘deregulate’” the telephone system Righf now, Telephone is engaged in lengthy CRIC hearings in Hull, Quebec, arguing that it should not lose out in new rate structures if the CRTC allows telephone system B.C Don't destroy this greenbelt Dear Editor There 1s a small area of greenbelt woodland to the east of Blueridge Elementary School Children in the area use a path through this as a short cut to and from school. During the five years that I have lived in the area, much of the low-growing bush has been removed to create a bet- ter path and a school adven ture playground Recently a ®oman, new to the area, started making complaints that the path was unsafe due to the odd pro truding tree root and that unseemly persons such as rapists Could be lurking in the rhe es Appatently she presented a petition to the District and over the past few days the area has been fue ther cleaned out and the woodland path has become a wide gravel path | gather her ultimate aim is to have the wooded area totally destroyed. To my knowledge there has never been an incr- dent of a child being molested whilst travetling this path ! wonder why a _ person who feels the woods pose a threat would choose to live in this area. | wonder why the District was so quick to spend taxpayers’ money tn an area where no reported danger seemed to be and yet nothing has been done to protect children from the danger of traffic whilst) crossing the Whitman Sechelt inter section Ishould Ihe to urpe other people in the area who feel there ws ono real need to fur ther destroy this greenbelt to District council Angela Moore North Vancouver area of wtite to the SHEEPSKIN deregulation and = permits CNCP and B.C. The only winners with all this, if the CRTC permits deregula- tion and ‘‘rate rebalancing”’ to follow the American ex perience, will be a few large corporauions ino the urban centres.
