C15 - Friday, August 24, 1984 - North Shore News Giifentertainment STRANDED IN THE PARK Bus strike spurs musical talent NEWS THAT progress in talks between the fueding sides in the bus shut-down Is slow, brings -a smile to the man known as The Boss. “It’s a matter ot getting people involved and hopeful- ly putting an end to the bus strike soon,”’ he says, adding emphatically, ‘‘but not too soon.”’ The Boss is the alias of a Lynn Valley musician. He wants the bus situation to stay as it is for a while because Stranded in the Park — a clever parody of a cur- rent rock and roll hit song — goes on sale in the record stores this week. And while Stranded in the By MARK HAMILTON Park is already getting airplay in the city, the flip side of the 45 rpm release — Born in North Van — seems likely to become a local par- ty hit. The songs, dealing with the problems of getting around in a busless city and the joys of growing up in North Van, are based on Dancing in the Dark and Born in the USA, hits by American rocker Bruce Spr- ingsteen who is known to his the local band produced the is toiling in anonymity under the name The Boss and the Bandits. “‘It actually started with Born in North Van,’’ says The Boss, who penned the lyrics for both songs. ‘‘l sang it to a friend over the phone and he got:a kick out of it. It grew from there.”’ The Boss, who was born in North Van, got the idea for the songs two weeks ago today, the band he put together went into the studio a week ago Sunday and the songs were played for the first time last Friday. But what started as a fun project for a handful of serious musicians — and asa Seandinavian furniture way of getting people talking about the bus strike — may wind up as more than that. ‘*The response so far has been tremendous,’’ says The Boss. ‘‘Terry David Mulligan played the Strand- ed in the Park three times in two hours and got 31 phone calls from people who wanted to know where to buy a copy.”’ Part of the reason is that the two songs are funny. Another is that the release isn’t a shoddy effort. The musicians involved are pro- fessionals — one of them, in fact, is one of Vancouver’s busiest — and 12 hours went into the recording and mix- ing of the two songs. The first release of the re- cord — 1,000 copies — went into the record stores Tues- day. The band, in costumcs that approximate the dress of Springsteen and his band with the addition of Lone Ranger-style masks, may make record store ap- pearances and is planning to play the two songs on stage at the New Body Shop in Vancouver next weekend. ‘“‘The possibilities are endless,’” says The Boss. ‘“‘We hear they’re talking about a bus strike in Toron- to now.”” The band isn’t taking the effort that seriously though. They’! be happy if the 1,000 copies are sold and_ their costs are covered.
