By ISABEL WEGG IF YOU'RE PART of the mounting wave of women returning to the work force after many years, you can bet there’s plenty out there that’s new. You also can bet that by in- vesting time and effort on courses tO upgrade your working skills, you'll increase your chances of getting a job. You may only need a short retraining course to bring you up-to-date. Then again, your goals might require you to go to school full-time. “The best thing women can do is contact the educa- tion ministry in their own province to find out what is available, or apply directly to the school they plan to at- tend, says author Monica Townson from her book A Canadian Woman’s Guide to Money. As well as the cost of edu- cation, Townson suggests women should think about other personal expenses in- volved in returning to the work place. ‘*The first thing is to real- ize that there are expenses connected with working,’’ she says. For instance, if a woman has a job where she con- stantly meets the public, she may find that she has to spend more money on clo- thing. And there are trans- Keg trom $140.00 to $290.00 NOW up Fo 0% Ott South Granville 2658 S Granville at 10th Ave at work portation costs; the price of meals, whether or not you pack your own lupch; and the inevitable day-care expenses for women who have young children. Once a woman re-enters the labor market, the family structure changes. And because there are now two wage-earners, the family tax situation changes too. A working mother can claim child-care expenses as an income tax deduction, as long as she can _ provide receipts for those expenses. Townson has a word of caution, though! If a woman has a babysitter in her home, she may find the sitter is reluctant to give receipts. But without them, the working mother can’t claim her child- care expenses. So _ before arranging for in-home baby- sitting, make it clear you ex- pect to be provided with receipts. A working wife also affects her husband’s tax situation because, depending on how much she earns, he may not be able to claim a deduction for her. So youcan see there are lots of questions for a woman to consider before going back to work, and it’s worth taking the time to get the right answers.
