qa v0 a4 B6 - Sunday, May 23, 1982 - North Shore News E@auto Budd blasts Bombardier DETROIT (UPI) - Another kind of carmaker entered the war in the U.S. against foreign competition Thursday with a threat by its only producer of subway cars to sue New York authorities for their pur- chase of 825 vehicles from a Canadian firm. A spokesman for the Budd Co., which also is a major automotive industry sup- plier, said the firm could have supplied cars more quickly and at a cheaper cost than the Montreal-based Bombardier, Inc., which won the contract Tuesday from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The purchase comes just a few months after MTA announced it would buy other vehicles from a Japanese manufacturer. “We are contemplating possible legal action against New York authorities for their purchase from Bombardier of 825 subway cars.
