He finished 9th in giant slalom and 10th in slalom events three vears ago during the annual Topolino compe- tition in the Italian Alps near Trento. Paradis’ goal is clear: to one day make the national ski team. He can take some inspira- tion from North Vancouver's Trevor Bruce, who is cur- rently in Chile, hitting the slopes as a national team alternate. Bruce, 19, will be groomed for the Canadian side as a prospect for the next three weeks before heading to Europe for fur- ther competition with the national team. He'll also likely try to make the four-man grade for the Canadian rep team that will compete at the World Junior Ski Championships in Switzerland later this fall. It’s his last year of eligibility as a junior. “Trevor's a big kid and very strong. Bright, too. If he can stick with it and stays healthy and has a good year this year he could detinitely make the national team,” Frout previous page Li Steger finished third in the Western Canada Junior Golf Association’s junior tour stop held at the Fairview Mountain Golf Club in Oliver Aug. 24 and 25. The field got thicker and the competition tougher last vear when Paradis moved fron) the J2 cirenit — home to B.C. skiers only — to J], which hosts skiers from all over Western Canada. Paradis has given up a lot to pursue this dream — soc- cer, baseball and mountain biking have all fallen victim to the slopes. “ft’s just nice to be up there on the mountain,” he said. “J love the travelling and getting to see all kinds of different places.” However, Goldsmid said there’s likely another con- tributing factor. “Manny is a speed demon. He’s not a bad tech- nical skier but his prowess is in speed.” If he fails to make the grade for the provincial team next year, Paradis will again take his place on the Whistler Mountain ski team. Goldsmid said he thought: Paradis’ chances of success on the provincial ream were |. good, though. “He's got real good bal- ance and his skills should pick up this year from the technical side, but he does have a natural ability to go fast and sometimes when you've got a lot of guts that’s a real asset.” said Goldsmid. “You can teach a kid to ski but you can’t teach him to have guts.” tact division. .
