A century later, St. John’s WCB hits workplace safety A North Vancouver business was among 31 companies included on the Workers’ Compensation Board May/June 1999 infraction list. Clay-Con _ Enterprises Ltd. was fined $2,500 for what the WCB described as a repeat violation of a worker exposed to a fall hazard in excess of three metres with- out the use of fall protection equipment. ¢ fine was levied in connection with a Jan. 22, 1996, infraction. In releasing its recent list of WCB infractions, WCB vice-president of prevention Roberta Ellis said that B.C. ermployers must make occu- pational health and safety a top priority. if they hope to rotect workers and their ttom: fine. . Ellis pointed io the recent WCB infraction list as evi- dence that many B.C. com- panies are not doing cnough to safeguard their workers. Beginning in 2000, a new ‘WCB rating ass¢ssment sys- tem that encourages and - rewards workplace safety through financial incentives will come into effect. The roposed system, which will have greater discounts and surcharges than the current plan, will reward employers who consistently have better than average claim costs, and penalize those that do not. “This new system will be more equitable and reward companies that make safery a priority,” said Sid Fattedad, WCB vice-president, finance. Brian Mahon, the son of Edward Mahon, travelled from his home in Seattle to be a special guest of honour. Former parishioners from around the provinee returned for the dinner, which was also attended by representatives of other churches (St. Richard’s, St. Agnes, St. Clements, St. Martin’s, and St. Catherine’s were all offshoots of the orig- inal church), and of social services organizations sup- ported by St. John’s over the years. “Outreach services are central to what we do at St. John’s,” says Beth Lawrence, who has been a member of the parish since 1943. “Social services for local people is a major focus for us.” Social services organiza- tions which began life at St. John’s before being taken over by the public health sys- tem include a local branch of Alcoholics Anonymous, the Emily Murphy House (a tran- sition house for battered Wednesday, August 4, 1999 — North Shore News — 47 Church has always supported outreach programs women now called Sage House), and the Well Baby Clinic.
