College departments help AN INTERNATIONAL effort in aid of the women of Santiago, Chile, is being supported by Capilano College’s anthropology and women’s studies departments. Until March 31, the college’s Women’s Centre will exhibit and sell colorful applique fabric hang- ings made by women living in the barrios or slums surrounding the city. All proceeds from the sale go di- rectly to the barrios. Each arpillera (pronounced contain photos of their disap- peared loved ones; others describe the water shortages, soup kitchens and lack of medical services. Surprisingly cheerful, these col- orful pieces of outspoken folk art Chilean women are exporiea around the world to draw attention to conditions in the barrios and to forge links with other women. Last year, the exhib- it was shown at UBC's Museum of Anthropology. The college’s department of an- thropology and the academic women’s studies program, with the assistance of the Women’s Centre, are exhibiting the arpilleras with descriptive displays in the Women’s Centre, M building, Room 102, during the following hours: Monday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday Il a.m. to 3 p.m., Wed- nesdey 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday 11 a.m. to3 p.m. In addition, 100 arpilleras will be offered for sale, tke $30 price being returned to. the arpilleras makers through the Saltspring Island Voice of Women.
