We also experience pleasure and surprise when, in our environment. we suddenly come upon an unex- pected sight — a glance of a romantic gazebo in a garden, or the sudden view of the city as we hike in the mountains and turn to catch our breath, Vancouver has endless surprising and wonderful views. sudden glitnpses of the mountains or the ocean from an unexpected angle. or the change of color as clouds move overhead and the sun suddenly appears. | believe that our homes need an element of surprise to give us pleasure and enjoyment as we enter, or move from one raom to another. We all have in our homes many objects that are purely decorative and serve no functional purpose, but such objects are as important as tables, chairs and sofa. They express who we are and make our environ- ment come alive — without them, our homes would be as bland as hotel rooms and as impersonal us display suites. Books. pictures, photos, plants, flowers, containers, collections and many more decorative objects add to the interest and individuality of our homes. But often such objects become knick-knacks that are kept in order not to offend the giver, or because they hold a memory and we are attached to them. Sometimes, they have a tendency to appear sonichow scattered and mismatched.
