They are no Jess rife in Europe — where some proposed solutions would brand any Canadian daring to discuss them pub- licly as a rabid racist. The latest case is tiny but boom- ing Austria (population cight mil- lion), one of five countries visited during my recent European safari. It was in the throes of a national election at the time. For a good many years Austria has been ruled by a socialist-domi- nated coalition, currently headed by Chancellor Franz Vranitzky. His coalition partner is the conservative Austrian People’s Party, Oa Oct. 9 the coalition was once more returned to power — but much more narrowly thanks to Jorg Haider. The charismatic, 44-year-old Haider heads the extreme right- wing Freedom Party which won a stunning 23% of the popular vote. With this popular backing he hopes to lure the People’s Party out of the coalition and force a new general ~ election by 1996. He’s confident of heading the government well before the turn of the century. Haider is a radical anti-foreigner, his big beef being the effect of immigrants on unem- ployment. . That theme was echoed here last month in a study by the federal | Finance Department entitied _ Impediments to Job Creation, which laid part of the blame for our high unemployment — at 10%, now the lowest in four years — squarely on Ottawa’s liberal immi- ; i gration policies. i Lots of jobs are created, said the report, but the labor force — boost- ed by an average 20,000 immi- grants a month — grows even faster. By comparison, Austria’s ’ problem seems tiny. The official jobless rate is 4.4%, but Haider claims the true level is 5.8%. ; Austrians’ jobs are threatened, he declares and Vienna is suffering housing shortages. The only solution, he insists, is an immediate halt to ALL immi- gration until unemployment is dri- ven down below 5%. He also wants to limit foreigners enrolled in Austrian schools and crack down _ Peter Kvarnstrom Display Manager $80-0511 (103) HITHER AND YON on “the real problem (which) is people from Turkey, India and North Africa who are involved in drugs and crime.” Haider's overall political philos- ophy (among other things he prais- es Hitler's 1933-1936 full employ- ment policy) makes our Reform =” party look like pinkish Liberals. But that alone is not the point. His significance lies in persuading almost one in four voters among one of Europe's most friendly, eisy-going and prosperous peoples . to embrace the implacable anti-for- eigner attitude being spread throughout the continent by mili- tant xenophobes like France’s . National Front, Italy’s neo-fascists and Germany’s Republicans.
