COOKING EQUIPMENT is the
Jeading cause of home fires in
Canada. Here is some advice from
Fire Prevention Canada and the
National Fire Protection Association
on cooking siafely in your home,

Preventing cooking fires

3 Always keep an eye on food
being heated. The leading cause of
home cooking fires and injuries is
unattended cooking. If you leave the
kitchen, (urn off the heat!

TF Keep young children away from
appliances when cooking, Enforce a
child-free zone around the stove and
teach youngsters nol to play in that
area. If you allow older children to
cook, supervise them closely and
teach them safe cooking practices.

working near heat sources. Try not
to reach or lean over the stove. You
can avoid this by not storing items
you use directly over or behind the
stovetop.

the stove. Take precautions and turn
the handles away from danger.

( Keep the stove-top clean and
clear. Keep food and grease from
building up by cleaning often and
keep things that can catch fire, like
pot holders or wooden utensils, away
from heat.

© Use caution with electrical appli-
ances. Plug one appliance into an
outlet at a time. Have appliances
with frayed or cracked cords
repaired before using. Be extra care-
ful when working around water.
Never stand in or near water when
using electrical appliances. Turn off
appliances after using.

© Keep all appliances and surfaces
clean. Spilled food can ignite and
cause a fire.

O Always have hot pads and lids
ready when cooking. You may need
them if you experience a small pan
fire.

If a fire starts

top, carefully slide a lid or larger pan
over the fire and then turn off the
burner. Never pour water on a grease
fire because splashed grease can
ignite combustibles in your kitchen,
spreading the fire.

©] Don’t try to carry a burning pan
to the sink or outside. This is
extremely dangerous. Pots conduct
heat and the heat radiating from the
flames and burning oif wiil make the
pot too hot to handle. Most people
who attempt this end up dropping the
pot, splattering burning oil every-
where, including on themselves and
their children. Clothing can ignite as
well as curtains and cupboards.

closed to suffocate the flames.

microwave, keep the door shut, push

15 minutes. Do not place butter or
other ointment on the burn as this
keeps the heat in and could further
